• I am now using wordpress.org (version 3.2.1).

    I had been using wordpress.com up until very recently, but I’ve learned that it’s much easier to find help and troubleshoot when you’re using wordpress.org, and also that you can use plugins and other cool things using .org that you can’t using .com, so I just switched. Here is my question from earlier, it’s the same question as when I was using .com, since CSS is the same ‘language’ whether you’re typing into a browser or you’re typing it into a downloaded application that uses similar software, and my problem is still the same. Thank you for your help!

    Here is a link to my blog. https://sharkcircle.wordpress.com/
    All of the posts I have so far are just tests, testing fonts, etc., and the most recent one is a table I want to include in my first finished blog, but I haven’t put the text in around it yet.

    Here are my questions. Elegant Grunge says it’s a 3-column theme (along with 1 and 2), but apparently the default is 1. Right now, the table I wrote in HTML in the top post on my blog is way too thin. So I paid for the CSS upgrade so I could change it from 1-column, which it looks like it is right now, to 3-column. I read through the whole style sheet as it is, and painstakingly tested out changing a lot of things, and nothing worked. I have been able to change the dimensions of the main post, the text (table in this instance), as in make the table wider, but I haven’t been able to make the actual column wider. So in other words, the table just runs into the sidebar, over the ‘dividing line’ between the main post and sidebar (or whatever it’s called), when what I want to do is move that dividing line line further to the right (in addition to making the whole page wider itself so as to compensate, otherwise the sidebar would run off the page, or rather get cut off). I just want the 3-column post body width like the theme said it could do, in a content – sidebar layout. Just 1 sidebar column.

    So that’s my #1 question, that I can’t find an answer for anywhere on the net.

    My other question, how do I change the background color/image in CSS? And not just the background around the main posts, where it still leaves the background of the post white or the default color, but actually change the background for the whole page, behind the posts included. How do I do this in CSS?

    Question #3. I know you can change fonts for the text IN posts in CSS or HTML, but how do I change the font/textcolor/size/etc for post TITLES, for the date listing, for where it says “twitter updates,” for where it says “by Puckcircle,” and all of that? I don’t want to be left without control of any of the writing on my page, because the default may not go with everything else I choose.

    Question #4. I designed by custom header image for a different theme, using the dimensions it specified for the custom header image, but since then I realized that theme wouldn’t work for me, so I changed to elegant grunge. Now my header image has the wrong dimensions, so I have to crop it and stretch it a little. Is there a way to change the dimensions of the custom header image the theme will take in CSS? Once I make the page itself wider, there will be room for a wider header image, so it’s not like it wouldn’t fit. It would work, if there’s a way to change it. Is there?

    Question #5. If you look at the header image on my blog right now, and this would be the case no matter what size it was, it doesn’t fill up the whole top part of the blog. My image has black borders, but then outside of that is this coffee grey/black color that makes up the top part of the blog. This isn’t the header, it’s not the background color either. What is it called, and how do I change that part of the blog’s color?

    Question #6. Width issues aside, my table that I wrote in HTML came out pretty nicely (by my HTML novice standards anyway), but I noticed when I previewed other themes, the table changes completely. Not just the theme around it, the colors around it, but the border width changes, sometimes the lines within the table, separating rows, disappear all together, or are only every 4 rows instead of separating each row like it’s supposed to. If I end up having to change themes as a last resort because I can’t change the width, how do I keep the table looking the same? The HTML is the exact same, it’s not like I’m taking out rows, so I don’t understand why they would disappear in other themes. But they have in some. No need to answer this as long as I don’t have to change themes, but if I do it becomes a big issue for my blog.

    Those are my questions. Thank you very much! If you only have time to answer one of my questions right now, please prioritize the first one. I can’t go forward with my blog at all until I fix the column width issue. Thank you for your time and help!

    in this case – apologies for closing your other topic.

    please post a link to your self-hosted site which is using wordpress.org.

    as these are all formatting/css questions, it is near impossible to answer them without seeing the site.

    I’m not sure but think I read here that the .org site is only for self-hosted WP installs. Your site URL looks like it’s a free hosted one from WP.com.

    Yep, think I was right, found this:

    Before you post, make sure you’re posting about a self hosted WordPress.org site and NOT a WordPress.com site. If you’re not sure, read WordPress.com vs WordPress.org.

    Here’s that link: (WP.com vs WP.org)

    That’s alright. I’m just looking for help with this after spending about 30 hours over the last few weeks trying to figure out one small thing at a time, and getting close to nowhere.

    You can see the blog and theme at https://sharkcircle.wordpress.com. That’s the one I made while on wordpress.com. I’ve since downloaded the 3.2.1 wordpress.org software and opened it up, but I don’t have my own domain name yet because I don’t want to buy one when I don’t have a finished blog yet. Once i do, I will have to figure out how to move the thing, which I’m hoping won’t also be incredibly difficult.

    But for now, I’m hoping someone can look at the Elegant Grunge theme’s CSS that I’m using at my blog http://sharkcircle.wordpress.com and tell me what parts I need to change to achieve the changes I want. Then once I have the changed CSS code and made sure I did it right and it works, I imagine I can copy that into the wordpress.org application. They both use CSS, right? If that’s true, and it’s the impression I’m under, then this should work, I hope.

    Alas, we can’t help you with the CSS on WordPress.com (mostly because … well, it’s .com and it locks down your CSS)

    You need to post this on http://en.support.wordpress.com/

    Once you have a domain and have your .org install set up, then we can help you out here πŸ™‚

    Magyver, that’s because I’ve switched, and I don’t have a blog on wordpress.org yet. If everyone would like, I can go copy and paste the CSS from my wordpress.com blog into the wordpress.org application, and then I will literally, technically, 100% be, at this very moment, “using” wordpress.org. If it’s an issue that it’s impossible to help unless you can look at the finished blog, I’ll understand. But as I understand it, the link I posted uses the same CSS, so, as I understand it, and I could be wrong, but as I understand it, that means if someone wanted to help, they could look at the blog I posted’s CSS, tell me how to fix what I want to fix, and then when I buy a domain name I can put the changes into wordpress.org.

    So if it’s an issue that it’s literally impossible to help me with this because I don’t have my wordpress.org blog up yet, then I’ll understand. Otherwise I wish we could get passed the technicalities and get to the problem. I’ve spent hours on the thing, I just spent money on the thing to wordpress, now I just want some help using it.

    Ipstenu,

    Can’t anyone go on wordpress.com, select the elegant grunge them, and look at the CSS? I can even post my CSS here in the forum. People would have to look at it anyway to figure out what needs to be changed, so there’s no difference if I post it here and they view it in my post, or if they go to the theme themselves and bring it up themselves. In fact me posting it saves them some trouble.

    I have the page up, I can copy the CSS at any time. I just want to make sure there’s no privacy issues or anything posting the CSS from your blog. Can someone take it and steal your blog, is there anything distinct about it I shouldn’t be sharing publicly, or is it just the default theme CSS anyway and no big deal?

    themes – even with identical names – are different between wordpress.com (where they are often quite modified on the inside) and the free downloadable for wordpress.org.
    therefore, it is quite impossible to say if a fix to your problems, as evaluated on your wordpress.com site, will work on the wordpress.org theme.

    But for now, I’m hoping someone can look at the Elegant Grunge theme’s CSS that I’m using at my blog http://sharkcircle.wordpress.com and tell me what parts I need to change to achieve the changes I want.

    you are still in the wrong forum, asking for a fix on a wordpress.com site – this is the realm of http://en.forums.wordpress.com/ – not of http://wordpress.org/support

    I’ve since downloaded the 3.2.1 wordpress.org software and opened it up, but I don’t have my own domain name yet because I don’t want to buy one when I don’t have a finished blog yet.

    in the meantime, you have the possiblility to install wordpress.org locally on your computer, and evaluate the themes there; for instance: http://webdesignerwall.com/tutorials/installing-wordpress-locally

    (@puckcircle)

    Alchymyth, what if I just post my CSS here? Experts can look it over and see what the problem. I’ve googled all over the place, and there are troubleshooting posts saying the width is contained in a “wrapper,” or in a “container.” The problem is my apparently weird theme only has the word wrapper written 9 times in the CSS, and all 9 of them are either in the widget or footer section. As for the containers, the post I read that mentioned containers said to find container-width, or content-container, and then edit the width within. Except my CSS only has: #content-container {
    background: url(images/body.png) center top repeat-y;
    }

    There isn’t even a “width” in there.

    All I really need is someone to look over the CSS and tell me where it’s keeping its width and other layout dimensions, and where I can edit them, since this theme does not seem to have the dimensions in the normal places.

    Also I’m posting on the other forum but this one seems much much more active.

    I’m closing this one. You need to work with people on wp.com – These forums are for issues with self-hosted WP only.

    Could we help? Sure, but that’s why some folks here to double duty πŸ™‚ Helping on both .org and .com. So please, help US by posting in the right place.
