• Hi,

I have set up and installed WordPress on my 1and1 domain but when I try and post the only thing that shows up is my logs, I can see the log files in Filezilla but I am not sure how to stop them showing.

    Thanks

    Dominic

  • Hi Dominic. I’m not quite sure of the issue you’re having, can you give us more detail? For example, can you supply the steps we can take to replicate the problem? What logs are you seeing exactly?

Thanks for your response ce_bradm. I am using a mySQL data base provided by 1and1 and connected to it via FileZilla. After putting in all my SQL details into FileZilla it connected fine and I could see my space with a few Log files such as Trafic.html, I created a new directory called home and installed WordPress into it, I completed the WordPress installation and it seemed to be working fine until I did my first post, all my site http://www.thecosybag.net/home is showing is the traffic.html page from my log.

I have not idea what I have done wrong and how I can fix it, any ideas?

I hope this was enough information to go on?

Hi platmack, sorry for the delay.

Where do you want your WordPress site found, for example:
    http://www.thecosybag.net/
    http://www.thecosybag.net/home
    http://www.thecosybag.net/blog

If you want your WordPress site found simply at:
    http://www.thecosybag.net/
You’ll need to move all of the files that are in that home directory one directory up.

I’m not familiar with 1and1, but that traffic.html file may be something they automatically generate for you so you can see your site stats.

Also, to confirm, everything was working correctly until you published your first post? For example, you were able to go through the WordPress installation procedure, etc?

I am using a mySQL data base provided by 1and1 and connected to it via FileZilla.

MySQL files are generally found on a separate part of the server, and not in your website’s normal directory. Were you by chance uploading a backup file, such as a “.sql” file?

Also, is this a new WordPress installation or are you migrating a WordPress site from another server?

Hi, I would prefer it to be http://www.thecosybag.net, I did try that before and got to the same stage as now and had the same problem, thats why I added a new directory hoping that would solve the problem.

I can still log in to the WP admin and see all the normal stuff, make posts ect but when I look at my site all I can see is the trafic.php file on my server.

I did not intentionally upload a back up file, this is a brand new site, I am not migrating from an older one.

Thanks again for getting back to me, I am very new to all this and its a little confusing.

Hi platmack. This is quite interesting, and difficult to troubleshoot when not having access to your files. You may need to have your hosting company take a look.

Do you by chance have any redirects in your .htaccess file that seem unusual or include mentions to traffic.html or index.php ?

    You can check:
    http://thecosybag.net/.htaccess
    http://thecosybag.net/home/.htaccess

Sorry I did not get back to you sooner, I was away from my computer. Just looked in the .htcaccess file and there are no mentions to traffic.html or idex.php, both of those files are in a separate directly called /logs I wonder why they are showing up?

Everything seems setup correctly. I would next try re-uploading your index.php file from wordpress to http://thecosybag.net/home/, as going to http://thecosybag.net/home/index.php shows your traffic stats.

If that doesn’t help. a faster resolution would be to contact your host. I’m sure as soon as they get in and look at your file structure, they’ll be able to get this resolved for you.

    Thanks for all your help!

Hi playmack. Keep me updated on the status here, I’m curious to find out what the issue is, Thanks!

Of course! I got a friend to log in who can actually build websites from scratch and he updated one of his to test it, everything appeared to be working fine so I am sure your correct about there being a problem with a wordpress file.

I have deleted my mySQL database and I will start again from scratch this time putting the WordPress in the route directory instead of /home and pay careful attention to everything you have said.

I will report back here tomorrow with whats going on.

    Thanks again

    Hey,

Sorry its been a while. Kind of got things working now, the site works but only on the new directory I added e.g. /home if you go to the plain website address if still shows that file.

I have also tried to start another wordpress site on a different mySQL domain and I am getting a WordPress is already installed message, I have changed the table prefix to wp1_ so it should be a blank space with no install, right?

    Thanks again

    Dominic

getting a WordPress is already installed message, I have changed the table prefix to wp1_ so it should be a blank space with no install, right?

The “WordPress is already installed” message may be pertaining to files already, not the WordPress database. Changing the table prefix is not going to affect the folder WordPress is installed at, so be sure to install WordPress in a clean folder.

    I hope this helps!

ce_Kevin, thanks for getting back to me. I have created a brand new mySQL database so forgive be if this sounds stupid but would that not be blank?

Is it easier to install it into the same mySLQ database as my old one in a new folder?

    I hope I didn’t cause any confusion.

Is it easier to install it into the same mySLQ database as my old one in a new folder?

Your MySQL database generally lives in a different part of the server compared with the rest of your website files. Your database is not in the files and folders that contain your WordPress application files, so when you reference your database and new folders, it is a little confusing.

For example, your WordPress files may be in:
    /home/username/public_html
While your database may be in:
    /var/lib/mysql/username_database

You don’t have ftp access to /var/lib/mysql/, so you can’t create folders within your MySQL database folder.

Yes, It is easier to start with a fresh database rather than share a database with another install of WordPress.

    Hey,

Thanks for the information, starting from scratch might be the way to go.

While your here I still seem to be having this annoying issue of my traffic.php file showing up on my site http://www.thecosybag.net, if I go into my website using http://www.thecosybag.net/home everything seems to work fine. Do I just ened to set up a redirect/forward so everything gets directed to the home page or is there a real problem here?
