• My site’s optimized for 800×600 screen resolutions.

    I’m running 1600×1200.

Is there anyone out there who is even running anything lower than 1024×768 (not counting pda’s etc) ?

Can I safely switch over to a wider theme and not worry about aggravating my readers ?

    Google Analytics to the rescue.

2.78% of my visitors are running 800×600, with
the rest running at higher resolutions.

    My question is answered.

Does your host provide stats that show what screen resolution your visitors use? My site is optimized for 1024×768 or above. About 15% of my visitors are at 800×600 or below. I decided that was still a significant fraction. My site is semi-liquid and will shrink down to 800×600 and still look OK.

My site is flexible, so it works nicely at any resolution.

I gave up on fluid widths — instead I have two versions of my theme, one for 800, one for 1024, and I use theme switcher plugin to let folks pick.

How many actually use that choice, I’m not sure.
