twenty ten child question- loops and functions.php files

I have been successful in creating child themes, but I am a bit confused on how to include other files in the child theme like functions.php. Because obviously they get re-written in the updates of twenty ten.

What codes do I need to include to allow functions or loop files to work in the child theme?
