Support » Fixing WordPress » Changing ugly internal URLS to pretty ones

  • I have over a thousand posts and many of my posts link to other posts which currently all have the ugly url (eg:http://mind.ofdan.ca/?p=3866)

I want to switch to a pretty URL structure. I know I can just change and all my ugly URLs will still work, but if possible I would like to rewrite all my old internal links in my posts so the ugly links are replaced by pretty ones.

    Is this possible?

And just in case it matters I am hosted on Nearlyfreespeech.net

    Thanks in advance.

    Dan

  • WP will automatically redirect ?p=1234 URLs to pretty permalinks, so you don’t have to change all the old URLs in post and page content. Just set permalinks to what you want.

I know that, but having all those ugly internal link in my posts bothers me. Plus if I ever switch to another platform those ugly links might not work anymore.

Put together a csv or a DB table of ugly links and their corresponding pretty permalinks and loop+find/replace with php.

Thanks but I have no idea how to do that.

    ?

having all those ugly internal link in my posts bothers me.

It’s nothing functional to worry about, and for that reason there is no plugin or automatic way to process and change links like that. If it’s annoying, you need to figure out your own way to find/replace them.

Plus if I ever switch to another platform those ugly links might not work anymore.

Of course they won’t work. Like with any CMS or platform. That’s what anyone deals with when working with or changing platforms.

You’re not going to carry over a URL structure like that to another platform. You 301 redirect like everyone else.

My point was that when switching to some other CMS platforms they seem to do a decent job of automatically redirecting pretty urls. Not the ugly ones. That is why I wanted to change all my internal links.

But it looks like there is no easy way to do this. So be it.

    Thanks for the help.
