• Hi all,

I’m hoping that everyone here can help, because if anyone can, people here can 🙂

I set up a site in April at vitaltitles.wordpress.com

I didn’t plan for tons when I created the site, but when I realized that I might be able to monetize it, I decided I’d need to host at my own site.

On the weekend, I set up an old domain I had, http://www.vitaltitles.com/ and imported my WordPress.com blog.

I noticed today I was missing a robots.txt file and my RSS feed was messed up, as well my permalinks were, well, non-existent.

I think I’ve improved, but I want to ensure that I’ve got all my ducks in a row, so my official site gets the same visilbity as my wordpress.com blog did.

It’s funny, I had to do no work for my wordpress.com site to get massive visilibty, but it seems that here something just wasn’t working properly..

Anyway, I appreciate any help in advance!

    Thanks,

    Nick

  • Change your permalinks to “/%postname%/” .. Google loves long page titles, but not with the date included.

    Techguy1 is incorrect.

DO NOT use /%postname%/ as your permalink! Read this: http://ottopress.com/2010/category-in-permalinks-considered-harmful/

Also, Google doesn’t care if your URL has the date (which is NOT the same as the page title).

Read this to setup Permalinks if you don’t know how: http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Permalinks

(And you actually don’t need a robots.txt file – WordPress makes one if you don’t have the physical file. It’s okay 🙂 )

Okay, thanks :). So, to confirm, I have my permalinks setup now like on my wordpress.com site.

    It’s date then post name.

Seems like it worked for my WP.com blog, and I can’t see any issues with the date (year/month/day) based on that article. But I assume google just ignores it?

That said, the usage of post name seems to only be an issue performance wise, it seems?

Year/month/day/postname or /year/postname … anything like that is fine. 🙂 Google doesn’t ignore it, mind you, but Google doesn’t CARE about that as much as you’d think. It cares about the postname, certainly. I generally manually change ones like ‘this-is-a-post-about-coffee-makers’ to ‘coffee-makers’ since shorter’s better in my opinion.

That said, the usage of post name seems to only be an issue performance wise, it seems?

Yes, but ‘only’ implies it’s a minor issue. After a couple years, it’ll become a painful performance issue, and then a crippling one. 😉 Been there, done that. Never again!

Fair enough! So do you think the setup I have now will help ensure the performance doesn’t suffer?

I JUST found that I’m the first result when you search for a review I posted last night, “Sam and Stella Backyard at Twilight”!

    So, that’s something.

The only problem is that the sample text that is showing up is just my “sharing” details from Facebook/etc.

Anything I can do to fix that..?

    Thanks!

You should be fine with performance 🙂

To fix the sample text, on your main index page, customize the site description. On sub pages, use the custom excerpt 🙂

    Thanks!

Okay, so I found the custom excerpt, I’m kosher with that!

But I don’t know where to go to customize my site description… At this point, I feel incredibly idiotic.

By the way, I figured out one of my main issues with the description, Sharedaddy was messing over the display, I had to deactivate it. Once I did, my link descriptions showed up properly.

Unfortunately now all I have to do is wait for that to re-propagate through Google. I wonder how long that will take?

Anyway, helping with the site description would be appreciated.

If I haven’t said this already, thank you. Very much.

It’s called ‘Tagline’ now. Huh. Wonder when that happened.

    Go to wp-admin -> Settings -> general

    And you’re welcome 😀
