password protecting pages/ sections of a website

Is there a way to create user roles that when a cetain user is logged in specific pages and/ or sections of the site are visible to him? For example, a board member logs in and the menu he sees is similar to what the public sees except there’s additional items on the menu or additional content. Can something like this be done?
