Installing WP locally

    I used this excellent guide for installing wordpress on my own computer a while ago, and it worked perfectly. My computer got a bug and the OS had to be reinstalled. This time around it worked perfectly once again, until after installation, which went through without a hitch.

    I ran the install.php, logged in, everything was fine, and then when I clicked “view site” it took me to the local site, but all I got was “index of /” with a list of all the files. Not the site, as it should have been. Anyone have a clue?

    Is there an index.php file in that list?

    If there is, then for some reason your webserver doesn’t have index.php as a valid index file.

    If there isn’t, then something has gone wrong with the installation…

    If it’s generating a directory list you probably (almost certainly) don’t have a .htaccess file in that directory. It is this file which tells the web server to serve up all the pages on the blog.

    So, go to /wp-admin/index.php on your site (assuming this works) and you should get the admin panel. Then go through to Options->Permalinks and click “Update Permalink Structure” and I think that should do it.

    Failing that, you may need to create the file .htaccess (use notepad or something, remember the “.” in the filename).

    If the wordpress has been set up perfectly this becomes a problem with the web server & we’ll take it from there!
