Plugin Variables

I wrote a plugin that adds twitter connect to a modal login window. Everything is working besides for the home page displaying the logged in user’s info. I tested this thoroughly and see that the function is working properly, but I am unable to get the $user variable that is returned by the login function to display in header.php. How does wordpress handle this? Should this be done differently?
