Support » Fixing WordPress » Site-wide 403 Forbidden & 404 Not Found errors

  • My site at sparklette.net has been down for most of the day. The homepage gives a 403 Forbidden error:

You don’t have permission to access / on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

All other pages and blog posts within the site gives a 404 error:

    Not Found

The requested URL /food was not found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

I can still access all pages within the WordPress admin (Edit comments, Settings, Plugins etc) except for the main Dashboard page itself (/wp-admin/index.php) that also gives a 403 error.

The last thing I remember doing before the site went down was to install the W3 Total Cache plugin, and update the WP-UserOnline plugin. The site worked fine for at least 12 hours after that before going down. I have since deleted the plugins through FTP, but to no avail.

Here are the existing file permissions:

    • public_html, wp-content, wp-admin, wp-includes 755
    • index.php 644
    • .htaccess 644

The site is using WordPress 3.1.2. Does anyone know what might be wrong?

Turns out the hosting company disabled my site due to high CPU load, resulting in the errors. I was unaware of this, and it looks like the issue has nothing to do with WordPress.
