There’s no real impact with retained drafts other than, if you re-use the same page title as a pre-existing draft, WP will add -2
onto the new post/page with the same title.
If I need to trim the drafts for efficiency…will I loose the associated images from the database also?
No. Uploaded images have to be manually deleted from the Media Library.
I there a way to “archive” drafts from the production site and store them?
Within WordPress, no – although you could always store them as text files on ypur own computer.
THANK YOU!
I’m trying to optimize my site. My post are generally only good for a month, and then the information is expired. But occasionally the same event repeats annually and I can reuse the content.
My webpagespeedtest is bad…I use W3 cache…smush my images…but my page still loads with sad rating. I thought the 400 images in media, and 200 + draft post were going to be my first plan of attack.
But…maybe not…
I really do appreciate your expertise, and the quick reply!

Those I would probably save as drafts for later re-publishing.
Images could be the source of some of your problems. Lots of large images on a page can play havoc with download speeds. Also go through your plugins – especially any that filter/generate front end content – and see if there are any that you can live without.
Thanks esmi – I’ll guess you know what I’ll be doing for entertainment for the next few nights…lol! Thanks for the insight.
