Internal server error when trying to activate nexGEN gallery 1.7.4

    When I try to activate the NextGEN Gallery v. 1.7.4, I get a 500 error (internal server error).

    The WP installation (3.0.4) is not in the root directory of the site, so I changed the ngg-config.php file to point to the location of wp-config.php, as per the instructions in the ngg-config.php file, but it didn’t work.

    Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks.
