The security issues may involve people uploading files to your filestore or penetrating places they should not. Your data is then in jeopardy and so is the Web server that can be crippled to death.
Safe mode causes problem when you try to add images because directories need to be created. Search the forum for more information on how to resolve this. Best wishes…

@simmer: some people have Safe Mode enables because of the policies of the host. It’s a bugger, I know.
