Just as my blog started working again, my ISP decided to upgrade to PHP 5.3.5, and it has broken my blog (“Database Error”), or more precisely, “Error establishing a database connection” is the error. My blog is now just a pile of electromagnetism sitting on a hard drive platter.

I can’t seem to get much satisfaction in finding out what causes the error, though I am able to suss out by playing with the error messages that it occurs somewhere between lines 24 and 38 of wp-load.php. That may not be saying much, since I noticed that a maze of files are called after that (files calling files which call other files), and one of them is getting something out of the database.

Any ideas? Should I be upgrading to 3.1? (a little late now, since I would need to turn off my plugins, and I need a working blog for that).

    Paul

There was a minor PHP upgrade that broke PHP scripts (esp those calling MySQL) at my ISP, due to some new hashing being used to encrypt the passwords. I just needed to re-run the set password=password(‘xyz’) command under MySQL in a UNIX shell for it to save it in the new format.

Down 8 days out of the past two weeks because of one or another minor catastrophe. Hookers would not go down so often 🙁

At least the problem is solved.

For non-programmers like me, I just went to my database, asked to change the password (in cpanel or the myadmin tool), and re-entered the same password.
