The User Level system in WP 1.5.x is not that great. But I heard it is being revamped for WP2.0.

In the meantime, the best way I was able to figure out what the levels do (more understandable than reading the codex) is to create yourself a Strawman username. Log in as Admin, bump Strawman up to Level 6, the Logout Admin > Login Strawman. See what’s different. Then try level 7, 8, 9.

For me, the feature I wanted was I wanted one of my friends/editors to be able to change the Post Author drop-down. We figured out this option disappears even under Advance Post for everyone under Level 8. The Codex doesn’t tell you this. Unfortunately I had to make my friend Level 8 when she doesn’t need access to Plugins/Options/Etc, just Post Author feature.

Hi, I was wondering about user levels and Dashboard. With users and being authors to a blog seems fine to me. But I’m not sure how users are promoted by a Auto or Admin promotion system. I was wondering is someone could tell me how that works and yes I have read the http://codex.wordpress.org/User_Levels but am not 100% sure. Anyway if a user get to let’s say level 6 or 7 what the see on the dashboard is more like the admin type but I want to be able to customize the Dashboard and what shows up and it’s looks completely depending on user level. Not letting Word press do it all. So does any one know of a plugin / hack or any thing like that. Thanks !

The User Levels article in Codex has been updated. Thanks for the info Dgold.

    ttech5593:
    From User_Levels#User_Level_Capabilities

“Visitors that elect to register are automatically assigned User Level 0, 1, or 2, based on how the Administration > Options > Writing Options Panel Newly registered members field is set.”

In that same article also read the section Managing Users as the “admin user” for an explanation of how to promote and demote Users.

Regarding changing your Dashboard/Admin panels you may want to look at Tiger Admin for a start:
    http://orderedlist.com/wordpress-plugins/wp-tiger-administration/

You could also edit /wp-admin/menu.php so you could change the user level required to do certain things, i.e. change the user level for plugins.php to 9 so that your friend could not access it.

Changing the user level to 9 for :-
1.Changing themes and using the theme editor
2.Changing plugins and using the plugin editor

I do not know much of php which is why I am asking for help..

    Ah,
O.K so you can edit the code, but what code do you put and I tried wp-tiger-administration and it sort of killed my WYSIWYG editor… Thanks
