    That happens sometimes.

    1) delete the file .maintenance from the main WordPress folder (should be there in the same folder as your .htaccess and wp-config.php file)

    2) Delete the folder wp-content/upgrade

    Then try again. If it fails again, you’ll need to do a manual upgrade.

    I had to manually upgrade which certainly takes longer – but it worked.
