upon further investigation, I can download the sitemap via Gzip but I still get the same error on the sitemap.xml page.
Google is rejecting it..

Check and see if your robots.txt file is restricting access to it. also check the perms on the file to make sure set them for 777, and check to see who owns the file. It has to be accessible by your Web server.

I have the same problem.
sitemap.xlm doesn’t exist and I cannot see in the ftp or load it into the browser
sitempa.xlm.gz exists and is correctly recognized by google web master tool
What restrictions do you have in robots.txt?
look in .htaccess and see if you have a redirection from
/wp-content/uploads/wpseo/sitemap.xml.gz If so please share it
If googles webmaster tools/ finds it that all you need!
It’s been 35 years since I did any programing so I not shore how to set up the redirect. Yoast says wp-direct will make it appear in document root.(proper palce) But I don’t know how to configure it.
Yours is working…now all we need to do is figure out how? That will help a lot of people.

sorry for the delay,
I have no relevant restriction in robots.txt
I don’t use .htaccess to make redirect (I’m not able to), instead I use a plug in called 301 redirect, I think that the plug in write rules tu .htaccess.
I’ve found a rule that I’m sure I’ve not created myself. the rule was about sitemap.xlm
I’ve deleted it a few days ago and I cannot remember exactly what was written, but I remeber that was wrong. I’ve delete the rule and now I can display the sitemap.xlm in my browser.
I suspect that that SEO plug in created a wrong redirect rule in the .htaccess and this is the reason why sitemap.xlm was not accessible
