Custom posts with standard categories

I’m probably missing something simple but I can’t seem to find a way to display the category selection panel within a custom post type.

I have set up a new custom post type called Football Blog and another one called Netball Blog, I have registered the post type and set these up so that these only support the title, editor and thumbnail options in the write post screen. All good.
Why is there no option to include the category selection panel as is the case with a normal post type??
