as far as i can see, they are visible under the one post that has comments.
if you want them to be visible on the front page, that is a differnt issue:

Instead of making all comments visible I am wondering whether it would be possible to change the color of the NUMBER of comments, but only if there are comments (more than 0) . Do you think that is possible ?
I just want readers to NOTICE once there are comments (and not only in the sidebar). In my theme all is light grey, I dont even notice the comments myself now …
i guess, you might be able to include individual html tags in the different arguments of ‘comments_popup_link()’
and style them in style.css
