• Unable to create directory /wp-content/uploads/2011/01. Is its parent directory writable by the server?

Is it because of the new year? Should I just create all the folders myself or is there a fix I need so WP will work and create the folders (as it has been doing)?

I’ve read other information about directory errors and none of it applies to this. I’ve had no trouble uploading files all last year.

Fixed it myself. One of my other WP blogs was letting me upload so I compared all the settings. In FTP I found the uploads directory was set at 755 on one and 777 on the other. That made all the difference.

If you have this problem, 777 works.

Not advisable to set directories to chmod 777 (i.e. Security Issues). If you have checked the box that says “Organize my uploads into month- and year-based folders” via Settings -> Media, then you have to manually create the wp-content/uploads folder, Year folder (e.g. uploads/2011), Month folder (e.g. 2011/05) and set the chmod to 775 to each of these directories.
