    Hello,

I was trying to back up my blog but now everything is down with this error message: “Internal Server Error The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.”

I noticed while it was running, my site had broken images, but then later on the whole thing went down..

Please, I am not very computer savvy, I just wanted to make a back up and now I’m afraid I’ve lost everything.

I can access the ftp, is there something I can delete or modify to bring back my site?

The URL is here: http://cathywu.com/journal/treadling/ , but there is nothing there at the moment.

Thank you in advance for any help.

    Hi Cathy,

If you FTP in to your site, and go into wp-content/plugins, then you can rename the directory updraftplus to anything else (e.g. to “updraftplus-old”). If it was UpdraftPlus that was causing the problem, then you will then be able to log in to your admin area. If you cannot, then UpdraftPlus was not the problem.

Possibly your web hosting company has really stringent resource limits that don’t allow you to take backups (backups need to read/write the entire website, so use more resources than normal operations), and have disabled your site, so you might want to check that.

    Best wishes,
    David

I’ve renamed the folder but it is still down. I’ve also written a note to my webhost, so fingers crossed that will do the trick.

    Thank you for the help!

    Hello,

My site came back, but now it gives me a 404 error – and only the site where I did a backup with updraft plus. All other urls and folders work for my domain, except the 1 site I tried to backup. What’s odd is that I received an email saying that my backup was complete (after I deactivated the, plugin and renamed the folder through FTP) – but the URL now redirects to a 404 site, not the 500 error I was getting earlier. http://cathywu.com/journal/treadling no longer works, but http://cathywu.com/journal/ does as does http://cathywu.com/ .

I am wondering, did my site get deleted? did my host delete it? Is there any way I can bring it back….? Thank you for any help.

    Hi Cathy,

Only your hosting company will be able to answer those questions. UD doesn’t have code that can do any of those things!

    Hi David,

Thank you. I’ve emailed them so I hope it works out.
But, I set updraftplus to put the backups on Dropbox – there are now 4 files from updraftplus on there. Can I assume that in a worse case scenario, my website is still complete on Dropbox and I just need to restore it from somewhere else? Sorry if these are very basic questions, but I’m not very familiar with any of this.

    thanks again,

    Cathy

    Hi Cathy,

If those four files are the plugins/themes/uploads/db (you can look at the filenames), then yes, that’s what you need to restore a WordPress site. If you check the UpdraftPlus FAQs, then there are various useful things in there – or you can buy a package from the shop (http://updraftplus.com/shop/) for us to do the work to restore a site for you.

    David
