Support » Fixing WordPress » 5.2 Site Health Check – GD module detection on Debian Stretch fails

  • Looking at /wp-admin/site-health.php suggests that the GD module is not installed, however if I attempt to install it on the server, I am told that it already is:

    # apt-get install php7.0-gd
    Reading package lists… Done
    Building dependency tree
    Reading state information… Done
php7.0-gd is already the newest version (7.0.33-0+deb9u3).
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

The 20-gd.ini file in the servers /etc/php/7.0/fpm/conf.d/ is also linked correctly to /etc/php/7.0/mods-available/gd.ini too and if I do phpinfo() on the site, I get

    GD Support enabled
    GD headers Version 2.2.4
    GD library Version 2.2.4
    FreeType Support enabled (etc)

Indeed, the site has been working fine (and with the exception of the theme update issue mentioned elsewhere) seems to continue to be so.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

That’s indeed strange, do you happen to know what Debian build you are on, just so I can test it as closely as possible (I have one Debian build which is looking OK, so I want to make sure i get the scenario right)?

32 bit version of Debian Stretch. The exact PHP version is in the above.

The site health feature also says the server “requires” a PHP upgrade, either because it thinks 7.0 is no longer supported, or another bug.

Ah, yes, if I query the server at, I get back

    recommended_version “7.3”
    minimum_version “5.6.20”
    is_supported false
    is_secure false
    is_acceptable true

Well, it’s supported on Debian Stretch.

Here’s the results from the site health info, after having increased the PHP time limit to cope with updating themes (see other report).

    Server architecture Linux 4.9.0-8-686-pae i686
    Web server Apache
PHP version 7.0.33-0+deb9u3 (Does not support 64bit values)
    PHP SAPI fpm-fcgi
    PHP max input variables 1000
    PHP time limit 60
    PHP memory limit 256M
    Max input time 60
    Upload max filesize 2M
    PHP post max size 8M
    cURL version 7.52.1 OpenSSL/1.0.2r
    Is SUHOSIN installed? No
Is the Imagick library available? No
