• Sorry for the totally newb nature of the question.

I am really willing to do the work to make this myself. I just have no idea what to even search for to do it. I am hoping to get pointed in the right direction.

I am trying to copy the layout (not the artwork) of this site:

    http://www.powazek.com/ i really like it.

The site was made in MT.

Specifically, this is what I would like to do:

I would like to have a three column layout with 1. a single post next to 2. a Flickr feed next to 3. a ‘”just a links” column. with 4. A “summary” on the bottom.

I am using Falbum for my flicker feed. So I would put that in the center colum (although I would love to add an organic border…cool). Where would I look to find info of doing imbedded artwork like that? The header are the border around the images are cool. Not my style, but I would like to do something similar.

I am very curious about a plug in that would allow a links column. I wanted to post a bunch of links daily but not have them push down my main articles..I have looked into some but have not found one with that behavior. Same goes for the summary on the bottom.

I also love the little graphics next to the categories and permalinks.

Any advice would be appreciated. Again, sorry for the broad nature of the question. I am searching for these answers on my own, I just dont know where to start.

    Thanks in advance.

  • 1. You will have find a 3 column theme that is close to what you want – Using_Themes/Theme_List; and modify it to your liking. About theme design > Blog_Design_and_Layout
    2. For a “full latest post” and other “summaries” at the bottom > see: multiple Loops
    3. Links > use the Links Manager that’s built-in… or if you meant short posts with a link, search for Asides or Miniblog
    4. I don’t know what do you mean by “embedded artwork”
    5. Agree: too many questions for one post (the rule of thumb is: one post = one question 🙂

Basically you’ll find answers for all your questions in the Codex.

Thanks for the tips. I agree it’s a lot for one post, but I have just been stuck.

The problem I am having working on my own is that I dont know correct terms. Like I would never find “multiple loop”…. and I search incorrect terms like “imbedded artwork” with no results. What I meant was that the linked site (http://www.powazek.com/) had design elements in the page background that were not straight JPEGs. I am not sure what you call this but I used the page header and the image border as an example.

What you did tell me is helpful. I now have more effective search terms, which is what I am looking for.

I really am doing this for myself, but I will need more help with the terminology to find the solutions in the Codex.

Thanks again to everyone in advance for your help…

That’s a pretty interesting layout. Doesn’t appear to be a wp blog. When you get sorted with your wp install, and want to start setting up a custom layout like that, your best friend will be Firefox with the WebDev toolbar installed.

So you can easily look at his source (SHIFT-CTRL-U) and with the WebDev toolbar, his CSS. Which will help you figure out how to wiggle that sort of layout around the wordpress bits n parts….

You need to learn CSS if you want to design a site like Powazek. It allows you to put graphics in the background like that.

My recommendation is start small… Powazek is very complex, and you are just beginning… it took me months to learn that kind of stuff, so you have your work cut out for you.
