Hi. Although I have been using WordPress for quite a few months now, I still feel relatively new to it. I have searched this forum countless times looking at other topics for feedback on how to resolve the issues I’ve been having trying to update to 3.0.1, and after many attempts I still get errors, and have to ask for help.

Like many others, when I choose to automatically update I get a message saying either “Could not create directory.: /public_html” or Could not copy file.: /public_html/x/wp-admin/css/theme-editor.dev.css”. I later did a manual upgrade following the detailed instructions found here: http://codex.wordpress.org/Upgrading_WordPress_Extended.

(Prior to all of this I turned all ALL of my plugins and reverted to the default theme.)

I then went to my “wp-admin/upgrade.php” page to complete the upgrade, pressed enter and it said there was no need to upgrade because I was using the latest version. Thinking all is well, I return to the admin page and see the same messages at the top of the admin page saying “WordPress 3.0.1 is available! Please update now.”

Also, to see if it would help, I manually uploaded the theme-editor.dev.css file to my /css folder. And, when I tried to delete my cache folder as instructed, I got a message via my ftp client I didn’t have permission to delete, but I did rename it to “delete” it.

I am at a total loss as to what the problem is now. Please help and thank you in advance.

Try deleting your wp-admin and wp-includes folder before doing a manual upgrade. You may have some files not being overwritten.

I just did the manual updating, it’s really easy!

    Do these steps!

    – Download the latest copy of WordPress from wordpress.org
    – Download and unpack the downloaded copy
    – Access your host files using an FTP Client i.e: SmartFTP
    – Access your files
    – Delete the old wp-includes and wp-admin directories on your web host.
    – And now upload the entire downloaded copy of the wordpress, replace the old with the new!

After doing so, just delete the .maintenance file and you are done!
