We just installed WordPress this morning, customized the theme and got started posting when we noticed that the categories just show a blank page and following archives links throw a 404 error. I’ve looked at a lot of the documentation here on archives.php, etc., but still cannot seem to resolve the issue. Any help is appreciated.

Switching back to the default theme solves the categories issue, and looking at the blank pages I get with our own theme, I can highlight and see that it’s searching for the default sidebar for some reason.

Archives still do not function in the default theme.

  • The Theme author might be using one of the template tags associated with categories and archives which forces the categories and archives to display whether or not there are posts. Put some posts into those categories and see if that solves your problem.

Or go into the template files with the categories listings (usually sidebar.php) and change the Template Tags parameters to not show if there are no posts. Then the categories will disappear until you have posts in them.

If you want to change this 404 behavior, you need to tell WordPress to distinguish between categories that are Not Found and categories that are just Empty.
