    Hi,
I am still new to this so bear with me please! I am running 2.92 and have customized several of the files (using editor)…the php files and also the css styles. When I do the upgrade I, obviously, don’t want to lose everything I have so far. I have to say that my previous upgrades within 2.x have not challenged these, but there seems to be some talk that files get overwritten…are these the types of files that get overwritten and, if so, how do I preserve what I have? Maybe there is a smarter procedure for how I did this initially…anyway, I am a bit confused and have held off upgrading due to this. Also, what about plug-ins…do I need to deactivate then re-activate? Sorry for so many questions but I suspect the answer is fairly common and might save me hours of otherwise misery and/or drudgery.

    Many thanks in advance,
    Debbie

  • What files did you customise? Theme files or core files? Assuming it was theme files and you didn’t customise Kubrick, you should be OK but it’s always a good idea to make a backup copy of your theme just in case.

With regard to upgrading generally, I’d suggest that you first:

    – Back your database and theme
    – Deactivate all plugins
    – Switch to the default theme.

That should place your site in the best position for a trouble-free upgrade.

    Hi Esmi,
Thanks for the fast answer! I guess I updated theme files..they are all the files that are found in my theme’s folder. Actually, it never occurred to me that I could even change files in the core directory!

So, backup first, de-activate plug-ins, then activate Kubrick, then upgrade, then reactivate my theme and plug-ins…is that correct?

One thing…I do have something called WP – Security Admin Tools, which directed me to, for instance, change my login name from admin, etc. (i did that in the database). Is that a core change (the login name) and, if so, would that change also? Just want to make sure I can log back in after all is done!

Many thanks for helping me out on this,
    Debbie

I wouldn’t ever recommend editing core files unless you are highly experienced.

    is that correct?

Yes. Reactivate the theme & plugins one at a time and check the site thoroughly after each reactivation. The odd plugin has been known to cause problems in WP 3.x.

Is that a core change (the login name) and, if so, would that change also?

No – it’s usually a database change and would not be changed again unless you went through the same process with that plugin.
