• Hello,

I recently tried making a multisite with subdomains, however I found out that my hosting provider, 1and1, does not allow for wildcard DNS. So, when I make a new subdomain site, it creates a subdomain, however nothing is there (shows the default browser error page). I want to know, how can I manually create a subdomain and link it to wordpress (for example http://blog.example.com)? Or, does anyone know of a fix for 1and1 and subdomain multisite? Thanks!

  • If your host doesn’t allow wild card DNS, you can create A record for individual subdomains as follow:

For example, if you have sub1.domain.com, create following record in the DNS zone:

    sub1 A IP_ADDRESS

Alright, I will try that out. Thanks!

Having the same sort of issue with a godaddy hosted wordpress install.

I tried to create a subdomain named * as it states in the multisite setup and it pops up and error message that says invalid name.

I want to try this a record method. Where would I find the ip addy I need to point at?

    Thanks.

If you’re on godaddy they require you to get a dedicated IP (at the least) for wildcard subdomains.
