I’ve had wordpress popular posts installed for months now. The view count that WordPress Popular Posts is showing on the dash board doesn’t match the count I’m seeing on Google Analytics. Nor does it really make sense. For example, the count popular posts displays for one of my recent posts is 1 view. However, I have 5 comments from unique non-users on this post. Which would indicate that there has been at least 5 views. According to google analytics this same post has had 358 page views. (This is the post I’m talking about: http://flipcookbook.com/2010/08/rosy-cherry-cake/)

Also, while debugging this I noticed a weird thing: The popular posts’ view count incremented when I accessed a post while my device was on my wifi. Once I switched to 3g however, it stopped counting the view. Not sure if this is all related.

Thanks for any suggestions you can provide! Really looking forward to getting this working correctly.

    Thanks,
    Raj

I figured out what is causing the problem, perhaps you can help me come up with a better solution.

Basically on my wordpress installation, I’m restricting access to the wp-admin directory by IP addresses using my .htaccess file. It looks like wordpress popular post needs access to this directory and is only counting the views that originate from the whitelist of IP addresses.

Why does popular post need this access? Is there any way I can allow the plugin access to whatever it needs without opening up my wp-admin directory to the world?

    Thanks!
    Raj

    Hi Raj,

My plugin needs access to wp-admin in order to update the views count via ajax to the database. That’s why the post count doesn’t add up when someone who’s not on your whitelist views your site’s posts.

Unfortunately, there’s no workaround for this. WordPress Popular Posts needs access to the wp-admin folder to communicate to the database via Ajax. You need to either disable the IP whitelist or downgrade any version below WordPress Popular Posts v2.0.0. in order to get the post view count feature working again.

Thanks for the help Hector! I switched to v. 1.5.1 and it seems to be working in the configuration that I want. Btw – I’m a big fan of popular posts.. thanks for the great plugin!

No, thank you for using my plugin!
