• What is the best way to backup your wordpress blog? How come there is not a simple all in one solution? I have done the export from the panel but this does not export the database? also I have copied everything from my FTP directory and installed a database plugin that downloads a backup of the database.

Am I doing this the right way or what is the easiest and safest way to ensure you have your wordpress blog backed up?

The easiest way would be if your hosting provider’s control panel had a backup section that allowed you to easily download a full backup of your databases and web files in one compressed archive. In cPanel, this section is called “Backups.”

If you don’t have access to anything like that, use your database backup plugin to backup the database and an FTP client to download the files.

If you have a back up of your database and a backup of your files you should be able to recover your site in the event of a disaster. There are plenty of ways to get an automated daily or weekly Database backup but File backups can be a problem as you may have quite a large amount of stuff to shunt around. I usually take a full file backup by ftp whenever there’s a WP version upgrade and do a more regular backup of just the wp-content directory.

However a backup can only give you peace of mind if you have tested the restore process. I use an old laptop running Linux apache mysql & php to test that I can restore my site backups as a local version
