Support » Themes and Templates » no 3.0 theme has solved navbar offsets

  • For nested pages (parent/child/grandchild) etc the drop-downs are offset to the right by one tab-width. I mean in ALL menus I have seen so far, whether pages or posts.

A partial offset drop-down, perhaps enhanced by color as well, would preclude the last tab on a long navbar from going off the screen.

Is this a fixable issue? It certainly goes beyond what I can figure out, but also, at least for CMS-intensive sites, this must certainly have been noticed by others, perhaps even resolved. Any suggestions?

I disagree. There is no way of knowing how deep the page heirarchy will extend on A.N.Random site. So no matter how you approach the problem, a dropdown that pushes the links to children to the right or left will always be eventually pushed off the page. Dropdowns that only extend vertically can eventually drop below the lower edge of the viewport.

So there is no “universal” fix. This sort of fine-tuning needs to be carried out on a site-by-site basis.

Thanks, esmi – and I can see your point for ‘vertical drop-down only’ situations, though I wonder how often relatively extreme drop-down breakouts are encountered. For situations that list pages (or posts) of parents that extend laterally when hovering over a parent item, color or small lateral offsets would certainly be helpful to all but very large pages or posts.

I will try using smaller fonts and perhaps also split longer tags so that the tabs shrink horizontally and can accommodate deeper hierarchies before being lost so quickly to the display margins. Not sure how to do that, but will give it a try. I appreciate your comment here and all your inputs in this forum

Hopefully not too often – although I have seen some ridiculously long dropdowns. But I think when you get to that stage, you’re really into potential usability territory. Dropdowns can be tricky at the best of times – especially if your mouse control isn’t too good – so long dropdown lists really should be avoided for a whole raft of reasons, in my opinion.

I agree that some visual indication of the heirarchy would definitely be helpful in most cases.
