When I try to automatically update plugins or WordPress itself the update page just loads, and loads, and loads. Never giving me a notice, or status window. Any ideas?

Try adding:
AddType x-mapp-php5 .php
to the top of your WordPress .htaccess file.

Which directory is .htaccess located in?

In the same folder as WordPress. You need to ensure that your FTP client or file manager is configured to show all files.
