    Hey everyone,

I was just trying to update my WP from 2.9.2 to 3.0. I first updated all the plugins used (AddToAny, Advertising Manager, DMSGuestbook, Google XML Sitemaps with qTranslate Support), then deactivated them and, naturally, pulled a full backup of the db and the existing WP files. I also deleted the “upgrade” folder under wp-content, that’s what helped me get through the update on the other WP blog I’m running. When I hit “update automatically” the update page showed the following message

    “Downloading update from http://wordpress.org/wordpress-3.0.zip.”

and then nothing more happened. The 2.9.2 is still working properly as far as I can see it. My provider is 1&1 Webhosting if it helps anything. Any advice is much appreciated, thank you! 🙂

    J.

    Install this – http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/memory-bump/

    Then try again.

I have had the same problem, with previous versions too.
I have switched off all the plugins (as mass action), and then the WP update has worked fine.
Though I do not like to switch off all the plugins, because some of them needs reset after this, but this step was necessary.

Ungi, do you mean deactivated when you say “switched off”?

Ipstenu, thanks for the tip! I’ll give it a try and then let you know how it went. I take it this plugin is to be left active during the upgrade?

Thanks again, you two, for replying! 🙂

Ungi means he turned off all the plugins (select all – disable). I’ve done that before as well.

    Exacly, as Ipstenu have written.

    Okay, I did that, too.

I didn’t get around to doing the update today, it’ll probably only be Friday when I have a day off.

I found this article on editing the wp-config (http://codex.wordpress.org/Editing_wp-config.php) and was wondering if that might help me, too. Though I’m a little afraid to crash the blog and get the white screen of death.

Is it technically possible to set up the WP 3.0 in a different folder, using the same database as the current 2.9.2 (the host only grants me one measly db) and then transfer all the stuff from 2.9.2, finally trading the current blog folder for the new one?

Try a manual upgrade before you do that.

Don’t know if these are related, but I was given some advice regarding editing my .htaccess file on installer issues in a thread I created, and the solution provided worked. Hope it helps.

I’m late replying to this one…

I lost my nerve and asked a friend to do the manual upgrade for me, so I’m all set with 3.0.1 now. Since the problem is the same for plugin upgrades etc. I’ll try editing the .htaccess file as you suggested, KasperSG. Thanks a lot for the advice! 🙂

    Hi Manaed,

solution provided by KasperSG did work for me too!

be reminded a .htaccess file cannot be created with Word, wordpad, etc…. has to be a rax .txt file in the first place.

I added 2 lines to mine:
    AddType x-mapp-php5 .php
    AddHandler x-mapp-php5 .php

it works fine, all automatic updates dont freeze anymore (WP ‘core’ and plugins).

let us know if that also works for you!
