404 Permalink problem

Hi & thanks for looking.

I have wp installed and to be fair haven’t given it much time. I bought a book – read it and started to dabble.

My permalinks were set at default.

I changed them to be ‘pretty’.

When i change them from anything but default i get the ‘nothing found at this blog’ issue.

I have remved / altered / re written the .htaccess but nothing seems to make the difference.

It is almost like the blog has dissapeared once the permalink has been altered.

If i generate a sitemap – it is full of broken links. I therefore have no option but to leave it in default.

Any ideas would be great.

I have read almost every post and tried almost everything.
