• I have been using this plugin for about a year now and love it. However, I just received a notice from Google Webmaster that I have had a spike in 404 errors recently. Up until the 2016-09-09 I averaged about 9 404 errors a day, now I have upwards of 160 and almost all of them have a comment-subscription path.

    I was able to generate a 404 with the following steps:
    * Open an article on my site frugallyblonde.com
    * In the comment area add my name and email (comment not needed)
    * Use the Subscribe link that says subscribe without commenting just above the post comment page
    * This Subscribe link will generate a 404 and will not add a subscriber

    Any assistance or insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Also, just found another set of steps to get the 404:

    * Add a comment to an article as general reader
    * As the author respond to the comment
    * Click on the link in the email
    * As a general user click on the Manage link in the comment area
    * Receive a 404

    Hi @sellersdw, those 404 message are only trigger by google because it tries to index your pages and crawl your links. This is the result of creating a Virtual Page with WordPress. As you might notices the plugin uses a key, as long as that key is not changed google will index the page, but once the unique key is change that page will not be available with the old unique key. Is like google trying to index a URL with a SHA1 value that was used for restore a password, the link will simple not be available for indexing and therefore you will get a 404 error.

    I understand the google bot issue and assume that if I add the exception to my robot.txt some of the automated ones will stop. However, I don’t understand why I am getting 404 when I click on the manager or subscribe links on the page.

    @sellersdw

    You should use Google Webmaster Tools to block access to ?srp=:
    https://support.google.com/webmasters/topic/4598466?rd=1

    For example, you can add the following to your robots.txt file to block the Google Web Crawler from indexing specific pages:

    User-agent: *
    Disallow: /comment-subscriptions*?srp=*

    However, I don’t understand why I am getting 404 when I click on the manager or subscribe links on the page.

    Looks like your management page is not setup correctly, please see this wiki to see how to setup a real management page, if this is your case.

    https://github.com/stcr/subscribe-to-comments-reloaded/wiki/KB#Real-Page

    I have the same problem.
    * Subscribe link without commenting generate a 404 and will not add a subscriber
    * Management link also generate a 404

    If I make a real management page – I get a server error – 500. I can provide the settings.
    The problem started a month ago. After updating to version v160902 (?). Previously she worked as a virtual control page!!! I use the plugin for about a year.
    WordPress – 4.6.1
    Subscribe to Comments Reloaded – 160915
    permanent link – HOST /YEAR/MONTH/DAY/sample-post/
    management page (virtual) – http://contrpost.com/comment-subscriptions/
    management page (real) – http://contrpost.com/stcr/

    Best regards, Dmitry
