404 Error when saving new product

    I need help and to be pointed in the right direction.

    Starting last night, when I try to save a product – I get thrown to the shops 404 page.
    Adding / saving a product worked fine a few days ago and has been working fine since I set up my store in 2018.

    I have not updated my plugins or anything lately – I was planning on doing that this week. So this issue isnt due to a plugin, or wordpress, or woocommerce update as the problem didnt exist a couple of days ago, with this configuration.

    I do not have a caching plugin

    Steps to reproduce issue:

    1. duplicate or add new product and then try to save draft, or publish it.
    2. If the product has html in the description – I get thrown to the shops 404 error instead of the product saving. No changes I made are saved on the product page.

    Steps I have taken to solve this:

    1. I have tried this on firefox, chrome, on my tablet and also a computer that I never use.
    2. I have cleared my browser cache in firefox and chrome.
    3. I have re-saved the permalinks
    4. I have contacted my webhost and they advise to contact you.
    5. When I look at my Redirection plugin 404 logs – the redirects to 404 are for /wp-admin/post.php and also /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php
    6. I set up a staging site up with my blogvault plugin and this does not happen on the blogvault server – when I save the product – it saves no problem.

    Hi there,

    Is your staging site and live site hosted on the same server? If not, and that’s the only difference between the two sites, then something likely changed on the server-side and you’d need to get in touch with your hosting provider to take a closer look.

    Sidenote: Are post saving working as expected when disabling your redirection plugin?

    The live site and staging site are not hosted on the same server. Disabling the redirection plugin doesnt help.
    Thanks- I will go back to my webhost – which is where I started and suspected, but they said no, and sent me here.

    Thanks again for your speedy reply – this has really helped narrowing it down for me to find the root of the problem.

    Went back to my Webhost again and they looked into it a bit further. Apparently it was a mod security module on the server – a rule there was causing the issue. They have turned this off and everything now works fine. I wanted to post an update here, in case anyone else may experience this issue.

    This is what my webhost said:
    Sometimes, due to poor website coding, mod_security may incorrectly determine that a certain request is malicious, while it is actually legitimate. This caused the issue.
