• I am a very basic user as the site was built for my GP surgery patient group and I merely administrate the account!

Every now and again, my patients get “locked out” of the site. I reset a user yesterday who had been locked out and, when trying to log back in myself after testing her account, was shown the 403 Forbidden page.

Any ideas why this might be happening? Layman’s terms would be very much appreciated…. 😉

  • Sometimes I see a 403 message if my file permissions get messed up. For example if I use ftp to upload a file to my web hosts server, I might need to change that files permissions to 644. File permissions indicate indicate read, write, execute access for the files owner, group, and world. If you use an ftp application it probably includes a way for you to view permissions for files and change them when needed.

If you haven’t done so yet I’d recommend contacting your web host support folks to see if they can figure why the issue occasionally occurs. The server admin might need to check the umask (default permissions used). More info:
    http://webdev.gmu.edu/umask/

Your web host might also already have info posted online somewhere such as: http://support.hostgator.com/articles/403-forbidden-or-no-permission-to-access
