Category-based Navigation

    I’m a noob to WordPress and I just want to do the standard nav based on post categories for my portfolio ie) a Motion Design section and a Blog section. So I have images for my navigation and I’m just wondering how do I link those images to specific categories? And which php file should I be using- ‘categories’ or ‘archive’?

    Also if anyone has other ways of achieving the same sort of structure I am all ears. Thanks!
