4.7 WP Update deleted all customization

When we updated our WP to 4.7, all the customization in our theme (invicta) was deleted – logos, menus, static homepage content. In addition, all the apostrophes and quotation marks in use were replaced with symbols – different symbols on different pages, not one throughout. I have updated the homepage and our theme, but would like to know what happened and if there is an easy fix for the symbols being used throughout.
