Why does WP use separate categories for links and posts?

    Forgive me if this has been covered previously. I did a search through the archives and didn’t spot anything pertinent.

    Why does WP use separate category lists for post and for links? Wouldn’t it make more sense to use the same (preferably the hierarchical post categories) for both of them?

    Is there any way to combine them so I only need to maintain one list of categories?
