• Hello,

I have a question regarding the use of WordPress within my root folder.

I have seen some websites set up such that whenever one enters the “http://www.<whatever>.com” address, it goes right to a WordPress page/site.

I am interested in setting up my WordPress in this way. That is, I would like my WordPress set up in my root domain and default page of my root folder as opposed to inside of a subdomain or a subfolder.

    How can I do this?

Thanks for any insight anyone can offer on this.

  • You can have WordPress operate from your root – you can install it in the root or in a folder below the root.

WordPress drives my whole site, when you go to the mysite.com you are in WordPress. I have it installed in a folder below the root (where it started) I “moved” it to the root a month ago to drive my whole site. Copied and pasted two files if my memory is correct, one file needed to be edited to find WordPress. If you bookmarked an old post the bookmark still works on my site, so no changes by anyone linking to my site. Many people set-up WordPress in a folder below the root and get the site set up and running before “moving” to the root if they have an existing site. FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS EXACTLY!

Oh great. See, I have not installed this WordPress yet that I am talking about. So when I install this new out-of-the-box one, I will just make sure I do all of this right at the outset so that I do not have to worry about any links’ being changed or anything, right, since I do’nt even have any links yet?

Sounds good. My preference would be to install WordPress in it’s own folder but set it up to drive the root. Just keeps some files out of the root and makes things look nicer to me. If I knew what I know today 1 1/2 years ago I would have installed WordPress to drive my whole site and not set up the crude html coded site originally.

    Good luck!

Ok then, I’m gonna follow your advice, heh. So I’m gonna actually install it in a sub-folder, but somewhere along the line tell it to operate out of my root, eh?

By the way, thank you for the insight, I appreciate it a lot.

During the install it will ask where to install WordPress (the folder) and Blog Address (your root). If you end up with everything installed and operating from a folder just “move” the site – just be very careful.

Many hosts have the a pre-done script you can run that installs WordPress (my host did, the only glitch was it was a real old version and I had to update things at the start)

Just install your wordpress where you want and then go to General Settings–>Blog address (URL) and change it the way you like and test your wordpress within another browser tab. If you are not sure. test it via VM or virtualbox by having snapshot of each step and enjoy life

Maybe I misunderstood you…..just installing wherever and then changing url is a bad idea. That’s how everyone on here gets themselves into trouble with being locked out.

The links provided by @saildude above give the proper method. Once you change the URL, you also need to move and edit the main index.php file

    Yeah, don’t listen to onephpcoder

Now I have to go into my database and remove the record. Thanks a lot.
