Categories & Tags not working
-
I’m having an issue with my categories and tags not working on my blog at http://lightroom.theturninggate.net. Oddly, they used to work. Now they don’t. I’m not sure when they stopped working, and can’t think of anything I’ve changed recently. To see the issue, access my categories from the “Articles” section in my sidebar, and the tags from the “Browse Tags” section of my footer. The links don’t go where they should. I’ve tried to troubleshoot on my own, but no luck.
The links are all being generated by the standard widgets for Categories and Tag Cloud.
Help?!

Really? Nobody has anything? I’m really wracking my brains over this. Are there more official support channels, or is this forum it?
New developments in category mishaps. I attempted to create a new category to test whether or not newly created categories would work, where previously existing categories do not.
I created the category, then went to create a post for that category only to find all my categories disappeared. I then returned to the Categories page in the dashboard also to find emptiness.
I’m looking for clues in the case of the Mysterious Disappearing WordPress Categories. Any help appreciated. Has anyone experienced this? Does anyone have advice what may be the problem, or how it might be repaired?
I’ve also tried deleting and reinstalling WordPress entirely, albeit using the same database. None of this has helped. I’m hoping I won’t have to replace my database. :-/
Did you try a different theme? After upgrading to 2.9.1 my categories also didn’t work correctly from the front end. After I tried another theme, it was fine so I dumped the idea of using the theme I started with – even though it was supposed to be compatible with 2.9.1.
However, I don’t recall having your same issue from the admin panel. Was your blog hacked before you upgraded? If so, you might have some bad codes in your files somewhere still. Categories was one area of vulnerability with 2.7 if you by chance upgraded from that?
Hi Inspired2Write,
Thanks for answering my pleas. 🙂
I tried the default WordPress theme, but received no love. I was running 2.7 some time back, but have made every upgrade as it’s become available. The blog has not been hacked to my knowledge.
Hello! I am having exactly the same problem that theturninggate has. I already posted this on other forums, but nobody is answering. it’s driving me crazy. I had wpmu 2.9.1 and upgraded to 2.9.2 but nothing changed. I am also using buddypress 1.2.1, so I don’t know if the problem is wpmu or buddypress.
Another thing that i want to mention is that my site is bilingual (english & spanish), and the tags in english do not show at all, only the ones in spanish. my site is: http://ikeesh.com in case somebody wants to take a look at it, to see what I’m talking about.
can somebody help me please 🙁 ?Like you, ikeesh, I upgraded from 2.9.1 to 2.9.2 with no improvement on the issue. I am not using BuddyPress, so I think we can safely say that is not the cause.
Is your category widget intact in the admin panel? If so, have you tried to remove it and put it over in the widgets not used area from the admin panel? Save the change, and then move it back where you want it in your template. Maybe also disable your cache while you’re moving it around, and then reactivate your cache. I had some issues with my widgets after my upgrade and I had to move them into the admin area where they are not activated and then move them back. Maybe that might affect your categories?
Another thought is you might want to take a look at this thread:

People had issues due to their ‘temporary directory’ being full, which caused their categories to disappear, but I don’t know if that would be applicable for your WP version.Hope one of those two things might help!
I’ve solved it. The problem ended up being that system alerts had caused certain functions to shut down. One of the MySQL functions turned off affected my categories and tags. Bringing the system to a full stop, then restarting set things straight.
Hello. I’ve been jumping from one forum to another, to see if I could find a solution to this. I want to thank you both for answering. I am going to try what you suggested Inspired2Write and see if it works. i am also going to take a look at the thread.
theturninggate how did you do it? I mean how do you stop it, and restart the system again, I’m sorry but I’m new to this :-).
Should I ask for help from my hosting company to do this?I forgot to mention that I installed and activated Colorful Tag Cloud Widget plugin, and now the tags are showing in both languages, but the links still don’t go where they should. some of them can’t be found, and the other ones take me to a different tag, or to the home page. Same thing is happening with the categories.
You can reset the server from your admin panel when logged in as the root user. My hosting service uses Plesk, and so I accessed Virtuozzo and used the Start/Stop VPS options. Depending on your control panel, the method may be different, but your host support should be able to walk you through it.
Thank you guys. I already tried what you suggested Inspired2Write, but it did not work, the tmp partition is at 12% so I don’t think that’s the problem.
Now I’m going to try to do what you did theturninggate, hopefully this will work.
I’ll let you know what happens. Thanks again.Still trying to fix the problem. I contacted my host support and they are checking to see is there is something they can do. I don’t know what else to do. Now the tags and categories in english are working, but the ones in spanish still don’t work. 🙁
I have the same problem!
Everything was fine, and now suddenly I can’t add tags, nor categories, nor change the timestamp on posts or pages. I also can’t drag and drop my widgets.
I DELETED all my plugins – no go.
Used the default themes – no go.
I do not know what to do… I am thinking of deleting everything from the server and simply installing WordPress again… but the bug may come again…I’m having exactly the same problem on my WPMU site.
I keep paying my tech guru restore a previously saved database and the categories will stay for a while and then disappear again. I’m not really happy to keep paying to have this fixed when I keep losing it anyway.
I’m running WPMU 2.9.2.
The problem didn’t coincide with an upgrade, or a plugin install or upgrade – there was nothing new happening.
My temp file is only at 13% so it’s not that.
Anyone found a solution to this?
