• I just updated my site to WP 2.9.2 (I think I had 2.9.1 before that… maybe 2.9.0) using the auto-update feature but now I can’t edit any of my theme files.

I can only edit the css file that’s automatically shown in the theme editor. But when I click another file, such as header.php I get a screen that says “Sorry, that file cannot be edited.” I can edit plugins fine though.

Even if I revert back to the “default” theme I still can’t edit it… or any other theme (i.e. a theme that isn’t even activated).

Activated plugins are: Akismet, All in One SEO Pack, Google XML Sitemaps, SimpleModal Contact Form (SMCF), YAPB Sidebar Widget, and Yet Another PhotoBlog

I saw the discussion here but @esmi suggested that we create a new thread.

Any ideas as to what is wrong?

Ok, I solved it… or at least for me. My plugin version of SimpleModal Contact Form (SMCF) was 1.2.4, just for a lark I deactivated the plugin and then all of a sudden my theme editor was functioning again.

So I reactivated it and updated the plugin to 1.2.5 and the theme editor is functioning properly.

Problem solved. I’ll mark the thread as resolved.

    😉

You should copy & paste your files from the theme editor and save a backup before making any changes with the editor. That way if your changes wreck the site you can paste the old version back in.

I noticed this issue today as well and I can’t edit templates or plugins. I’d just updated SEO Ultimate 1.7.2 so I deactivated it and I noticed that I can now use the editor again. Reactivate it and the error occurs.

I’m seeing this problem and don’t have any of the plugins listed. Anyone have any more information about 2.9.2 not editing theme files?

@jmacmullen: Upgrade SEO Ultimate to version 1.7.3 or later to fix the problem.

Try disabling/upgrading plugins and see what happens. The culprit for me was also SimpleModal Contact Form (SMCF) 1.2.4 which was an old version.

in my blogs a Hungred Post Thumbnail plugin is the culprit,
perhaps some plugins which changes theme’s code automatically can make this error, you should check if you have kinda plugins

I am having the same problem, but even when I deactivated all of the plugins, the css for my blog was still gone and I can’t edit or download any themes or upgrade a plugin. Deleting the plugin that needs updated didn’t fix the issue either.

It started when I was editing a font size in the the css file and then one of the plugins had an update pop up. After that, when I saved the edited css, all of the content in that file disappeared, and the other themes became uneditable and undownloadable, etc. I do not have the plugin-culprits listed above, and like I mentioned, deactivating all of mine didn’t fix the issue.
