how do you create dropdown lists of categories

    I am trying to make dropdown lists of categories, where the first dropdown is for the main category “parent” and to the right would be another dropdown that would autopopulate with that categories children, and then another with that categories children, and when the user is done selecting, they press submit and go to the right category…
    is this possible and any ideas anyone?
