re install of wp and posts no show

i put the files and folders in public/blog789 and have tried to grab 3 excerpts from posts onto index.php of my site. now the excerpts and just links (should they be) and when i click on a link i get a blank screen.
i changed site url and home url to tio.ca/blog789. i don’t know if i ftp’d the htaccess file. Where would it be on my pc? i’ve set permissions on index and config.php files. What have i missed? Thanks for any help.
