I am a fairly new user to WP and am wondering what is the best way to handle WP updates? My site is currently working perfectly and all plugins have been modified to work correctly with the current version. In the past when I have updated the WP version it has caused plugin conflicts that have taken a long time to remedy .Should I just leave it at the current version or will I regret it down the road and have even more work to do to catch up?

    version: 2.8.5

    Thanks for the input.

  • If it’s a security update, you may want to seriously consider updating. But check the plugin sites first to see if they have upgraded their plugins to support the new WP version.

the main worry if you don’t upgrade, is getting hacked, and losing everything. Recovering from a hack takes way longer than upgrading WP…. if you can recover.

WP versions that are just a few below the current version tend to be a prime target for hacks and other types of attack. That suggests that your site would be high risk right now. FWIW, I’ve not seen as many plugin issues in upgrades from 2.8 to 2.9 as there were between 2.7 and 2.8.

Thanks for all the input. For others wondering the same thing, I did update from 2.8.5 to 2.9.1 and had no problems with any of the 10 plugins that I use. Thanks again for the help.
