Hide / Show User Menu

Hello,

I run http://www.dcwahm.ca and am looking for a suggestion to add in a panel for our members when they’ve signed in.

I don’t like the login sidebar widgets for WordPress, so I created an image link to take the user to the sign-in / register page. Now when that user signs in and it brings them back to the index page, there is no indication that this user has been signed into their account.

Is it possible to have a Side-bar widget that shows only to signed in members so that I could create a sidebar menu for a user to administrate their accounts?

If possible, I’d really like to make it so when I click the login image, it either loads a page in the same window, or make a drop-down expand menu from the image itself.

Is there anyone out there that could point me in the right direction?
