    .htaccess files are generally not visible by default. If it’s an .htaccess file for WP, it needs to reside in the WP root, not your site root. If you have a control panel with a file manager, you can usually see the .htaccess file there even if it’s not visible in your ftp client.

    .htaccess needs to reside with your index.php (not necessarily where WP is installed). most FTP clients have an option in preferences (options) to make invisible files visible…have a look there.
