Support » Installing WordPress » Installation: Fresh install but old template question

  • Hi all,

I have just done a fresh install of 1.5 but I wish to use my old template. I have read about porting over 1.2 templates and that all makes sense. But I have a few questions.

    1. I see the default template is split up into include section. Mine isin’t is that a problem?

    2. For my template I call a global CSS file that feeds all my other pages. Do I just call that in the normal way?

Or is it best I start the template from scratch?

    Just wondered.

    Thanks

  • If you have read all the documentation on upgrading your theme in the WordPress Codex and referenced sites, it says in there that you have a couple of options. Since your “site theme” is your own, you can do whatever you want with it. If you use a theme, your data is the same, only the looks will change…for the most part.

You can have everything in one file, like your old system, or take advantage of the power of the includes and gets and separate your template into the different parts, following the models set by the default and classic themes. It’s up to you.

And the style sheet is called the exact same way, it is just recommended that you change the “heading” of the style sheet to match the new format so the Presentation Panel in the Admin which designates Themes, will “recognize” the new style sheet and list it for you to select.

You can also start from scratch. I’ve done it all ways and found that I actually made even bigger improvements when I started from scratch. I recommend that your scratch be either the default or classic theme, and one that you realize is pretty darn close to what you want as an end result so you don’t have to scratch too deep a scar in the soul. 😉
