 * I tried installing WordPress 3.1.1 and my WordPress recognized the new installation
   and everything works except for when I try to go into the Network Admin. It does
   not load. All the sub-sites still exist and I can access them through My Sites,
   but I can’t control them through Network Admin as nothing loads. I tried reuploading
   the 3.1.1 files but that didn’t do anything.

 * By not loading, you mean it goes to a blank white screen? If that is the case,
   check you error logs. You’ve got a PHP error.

 * You’ll have to be more specific.
 * Does it time out?
    Does it white screen? Does it go in a redirect loop?

 * I have exact same problem for almost a month (since 3.1 upgrade).
    I posted several
   questions, I read and tried almost everything. I even upgraded manualy to 3.1.1(
   automatic upgrade doesn’t work, as well as Network admin, Install new plugins,
   Editor… and who knows what else – I have blank screen.) At one thread I read
   solving problem by changing wp-config: define(‘SITE_ID_CURRENT_SITE, 7) define(‘
   BLOG_ID_CURRENT_SITE, 7)
 * Author didn’t explain why “7”, default is “1”, but he had 7 subdomains. So, I
   have 2 subdomains and I tried with 2 – but nothing happens.
 * The site is working, in fact I can do whatever I want (via FTP), but it is annoying

 * I too am having the same problem, and so I’ll post my experience. Maybe then
   we can find a way to solve this.
 * I upgraded to 3.1.1. I got the following message in the admin panel:
 * > Thank you for Updating! Please visit the Update Network page to update all
   > your sites.
 * Where it says “Update Network,” I clicked the link. It never loads the network
   admin panel. It just hangs up. Eventually, I get the following message:
 * > Error establishing a database connection
   > This either means that the username
   > and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can’t
   > contact the database server at localhost. This could mean your host’s database
   > server is down.
   > •Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
   >  •Are you sure that
   > you have typed the correct hostname? •Are you sure that the database server
   > is running? If you’re unsure what these terms mean you should probably contact
   > your host. If you still need help you can always visit the WordPress Support
   > Forums.
 * I am using IE8 running on Windows XP. My backup browser is Google Chrome. When
   I try to update in Google Chrome, it’s telling me that I’m getting too many redirects.
 * I checked to see if all the tables are there (it looks like it), I optimized
   the database because I thought that was the problem, and I disabled all of the
   plugins to see if that was a problem. (I had to rename the plugins folder since
   I can’t access network admin).
 * My sites are all loading, and they look fine. The problem is that if I need to
   update anything on the network, I can’t, short of uploading through FTP.
 * I’m open to any and all suggestions. Thanks.

 * god… it was THEME here!!! I erased all plugins, I reinstalled whole WP… and it
   was THEME all the time! (“Gemer” at my case – and it doesn’t cause any other
   problem, just Network since 3.1)

 * FYI, the whole site number 7 business was because that poster was using site #
   7 as their MAIN site (yes you can use 1, most people do, but some of us use …
   3 😉 we’re weird like that.).

 * Thank you Andrea. I’ll try it out as soon as I have time and see what happens.
 * You’ve actually solved a lot of problems over the years for me and didn’t even
   know it. I’ve been a lurker here for years, but I didn’t see the need to post
   until now because I had exhausted all of my resources.
 * Again, thank you soooooooo much. You’re a real gem.

 * The Network Admin page on Chrome says ‘This webpage has a redirect loop’

 * **theshadowfan**, disable all your plugins, and if you can, flip your theme to
   Twenty Ten (easiest way is to remove your current theme – WP will default to
   Twenty Ten).

 * I did all that. I renamed the plugins directory because that was the only way
   I could get to it. Most of my sites use the Twenty Ten theme already. The ones
   that didn’t, I changed to Twenty Ten while I was testing.
 * I don’t understand why there has to be this extra step. It worked fine before.
   I thought the purpose of running one install of WordPress was to save you time.
   This is just making me pull my hair out.
 * I got the same error in Chrome btw. I got a database error in IE. Anybody try
   Firefox?

 * **jinger**
 * > I thought the purpose of running one install of WordPress was to save you time.
 * No, it’s for the purpose of using on install to run a Network of sites 😉 That
   it saves time (mostly) is a bonus. And when it WORKS, it’s great. Nothing works
   100% of the time. Keep the hands out of your hair 😉
 * Did you rename mu-plugins as well?
 * I would do this: Make sure ALL the plugins are off. Then MANUALLY re-upload the
   WordPress files (it won’t hurt anything). Then go to the network admin, see if
   you can get in.

 * That’s what I mean. I’m running one install to run a network, but it also saves
   me a lot of time and allows me to focus on writing (I’m a writer, so that’s my
   favorite part, writing the pages.) Sorry I wasn’t clear.
 * Can you explain the MU plugins thing? I set up my network after WordPress 3.0
   came out. I never used MU. Are you talking about plugins I used network wide?
   Those are all inside of one plugin directory. I don’t think I have anything outside
   of the plugins directory but I will look. Thanks for your help. I’m willing to
   try anything.

 * Hi,
 * I hope someone can help me, I have a similar problem. I am completely new to
   wordpress and have not been able to set it up properly. I have downloaded wordpress
   3.1.1 to my computuer, I added a database with my hosting company ‘fasthosts’
   for my domain and then uploaded the files using ftp client filezilla. I set up
   a sub directory demo so it didnt interfere with my site so I could have a play
   with wordpress but all I can see is a blank white page.
 * Please see [http://www.thix.co.uk/demo/wp-admin/install.php](http://www.thix.co.uk/demo/wp-admin/install.php)
 * I am a complete novice to this and have basically followed youtube videos to
   help me get this far [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nse3Gdtvs4](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nse3Gdtvs4),
   does anyone know if I have made a basic error? Thanks again for anyones help!
