How Many Plugins is Too Many?

Howdy –

What are the consequences of having too many plugins? Can this slow down your site? I noticed that I am now getting errors (those fatal memory errors) while doing basic things like looking at comments in the WP back end. I disable a few plugins and the problem goes away.

But is it as simple as allocating more memory to php? I assume it’s better to be careful about overdoing it, but any rule of thumb? Any way to tell how much any given plugin is going to use?
